Welcome to This Is Cute. We’re Jenna, Jayna, and Verena. We text all day about cute stuff so you don’t have to. If you’re interested in seeing the previous and equally unhinged editions, they’re here.
Hi hi hi everyone, it’s Jayna and I’ve gone rogue! CASH OUT YOUR 401Ks AND SPEND THEM ON VINTAGE SWEATSHIRTS! (Just kidding, absolutely do not do that.) However it is just me today, with our first ever TIC Hot Tip! In the spirit of This is Cute’s origin as a text thread filled with our shopping obsessions, we’ve decided to offer the occasional quick recommendation—could be a really good sale, a fun new brand, stuffed animals for adults (me and VVP), or kid’s stuff for actual children (Jenna). Basically, whatever one of us feels excited to share with all of you cutes.
Fittingly, our inaugural TICHT (that acronym is sure to catch on, lol) is No.6 related. Verena and I are obsessed with a particular clog sandal they offered for a few seasons, the Abuela. I think the first time I saw them was in the spring of 2020 and I immediately ordered a pair in a perfect shade of cherry red pony hair. They fit like a dream and did that thing a fun pair of red shoes can do, which is make every outfit 15% better. They also gave me fond memories of the summer we all wore Worishofers and people wrote dumb articles about the tragedy of the “ugly shoe” trend when, really, they should’ve been worrying about our arches.
No.6 made the Abuelas in a handful of cute colors, and I always meant to get a second pair—I came very close to a tangerine pony hair version that went on sale, but told VVP to get them instead (I am SUCH a good friend) and that’s how they became her favorite too. And then… they disappeared. I haven’t seen them in No.6’s spring/summer lineup for a couple of years, including their most recent collection, and while they could bring them back, I had sort of resigned myself to being happy with my one pair. But then! I remembered Sven!
For those unfamiliar, Sven is the best sneaky clog source in the world. They’ve been around forever, their website is an absolute disaster, I’m pretty sure they white label at least some of No. 6’s styles, and they let you customize e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. And for anyone nervous about ordering custom without getting to see them in person, do not worry—they’ll send you free leather and/or suede swatches! Amazing! Anywayyyy, look who I found, hidden in the closeouts section (rude): the Abuela, rechristened Barbie, with a slightly different (non-wedge) heel. The colors offered—hot pink, turquoise, kiwi, etc.—were not for me but, remember, Sven lets you do whatever tf you want, so I immediately ordered a pair in Cordovan with a natural wood base and mid-heel.
They are PERFECT. Truly the sandal of my dreams—great with dresses, great with shorts, great with jeans, even great with socks, which is what I did the day I got them since I was dying to wear them to dinner but it’s still kinda cold. They’re also—nbd—over $100 cheaper than the Abuelas (jk that is a vbd!), so I’m tempted to get one more pair, in gold maybe??
Tl; dr: Clogs clogs clogs clogs clogs, Sven Sven Sven, Barbie, the end.
