Welcome to This Is Cute. We’re Jenna, Jayna, and Verena. We text all day about cute stuff so you don’t have to. If you're interested in seeing the previous and equally unhinged editions, they’re here. Today, we’re getting out of our closets and into bed because someone (cough, our old boss) requested a home goods edition of TIC. We focused on building the perfect bed, so is everyone ready for hot takes on headboards, misandrist pillows (jk), and jersey sheets?? Let’s cuddle up and get into it.
Verena von Pfetten: Hi cuties!
Jayna Maleri: Hi CUTES.
Jenna Gottlieb: Awww, hi cutes!
VVP: Ok, home stuff! Which is HARD.
JG: Very hard!!!
VVP: I feel like there's just a real delta between the things I like and want, and, well, the things I can realistically afford to surround myself with. Because home furnishings are expensive, as they should be, because theoretically you are buying something for life…but as someone who is still living the rental life, unfortunately it's hard for furniture to be permanent!!
JG: Anything big ticket feels very stressful and high stakes.
JM: As someone who has been a splurgemonster on certain pieces of furniture, I have THOUGHTS.
VVP: Because you have perfect taste.
JM: No! I feel like I have architect syndrome and get too taken in by aesthetics. Form over function, bb.
VVP: That's mostly me. Except I live with someone who puts a strong (good!) emphasis on function. If it were up to me, I'd just be surrounded by cute things that half-do any of the things they're supposed to do. BUT THEY’D LOOK CUTE.
JM: That’s exactly how we ended up with five gorgeous couches that no one wants to sit on.
VVP: Your couch saga is maybe one of my most favorite things about you.
JM: But! We also have some very comfy things! And speaking of comfy…let’s talk about beds!
VVP: I love bed.
JG: I’m currently in bed.
VVP: OK so what are the important attributes of a perfect bed? Pillows, sheets, comforter…
JM: SOFT. Like a cloud. If I get divorced, it will be because of my desire to sleep in a puff of gossamer (#notsponsored).
VVP: I think the frame itself kind of isn't that important, personally!
JM: Yeah, big fat don't care about the frame, unless you're going for a cute statement.
JG: I care about the frame!! SORRY. But I just bought a new bed frame and it was hard.
VVP: I think Jayna and I have the same bed as each other and … everyone else.
JM: We've got the old West Elm special. But Jenna got a CHIC.
JG: I got an upholstered MOHAIR.
VVP: UPHOLSTERED MOHAIR?!
JM: CAN YOU STAND IT??
VVP: No, I can't stand it, I WANT IT.
JG: I’m determined to make my new bed the perfect bed, which I’ve never done. Jayna slept in my old bed … she knows.
JM: Lol, the old bed was wild—a real lumpelstiltskin. I’m so excited for her new one.
VVP: I’m sitting here googling upholstered mohair bed frames trying to figure out which one you got.
JG: Here she is :)
VVP: Okay, so pillows and sheets and bedding. I've been deep in the tank for linen for a very, very, very long time. Good linen ends up SO soft and should last way longer than any other bed sheets. And it keeps you cool if you're a bed-sweater (sorry)!
JG: Yeah, linen feels very relaxing to me. Airy but cuddly. It’s boring, but I love my linen Parachutes. Just got the Terra. And I’m intrigued by this Ukranian brand—such good colors (and omg they make outfit sets too 😭).
VVP: So I used to have Parachute but... I think the colors fade SO much. I'm now, as everyone knows, all in on Bed Threads. I know we've said this in a previous edition, but they’re great for being able to mix and match. And if you get a couple full sets, you end up with 87263498273423 permutations, which is so fun.
JM: I don't love linen. Not soft enough. Too snakey, SORRY. And then once it is soft, it feels flimsy. I know no one will agree with me.
VVP: I don’t like my sheets all slippy. Cotton percale or whatever—no thank you. Feels like I’m gonna slooooooop right out of the bed.
JG: ME NEITHER.
JM: Looooove a slippy.
JG: Remember when everyone got to college and was into JERSEY sheets?
JM: Was literally going to say that if I could just use jersey and not feel like a total tool I would.
VVP: I just gagged a little. Sorry to all the jersey heads!
JM: My Coyuchi sheets are great for cool cutes who like a soft.
VVP: Okay, so I do like your Coyuchis. I think the crinkle helps. A whisper of texture is good.
JG: No idea how these feel, but remember when I got ambitious and wanted to make this my bed?
JM: Yesssss. Coco and Wolf! I have some of their stuff!
VVP: I DON’T REMEMBER because i wasn't PART OF IT. But I love those.
JM: I made them do a custom duvet cover for me, lol.
VVP: Ok, next layer! I swear by the Buffy Breeze comforter, because it's not too heavy (as in dense), but it is still kind of heavy (as in weighty). I'm newly into weighted comforters! Anya and Colin have them and they are SO soothing. This is the one they have and I am obsessed with it.
JM: I also have a Breeze! Great for all seasons because you can layer over/under it when it’s cold!
JG: Want to talk about pillows?
JM: Yesss, I love a flat. This is my secret pillow source.
JG: I cannot with a slender.
VVP: I don't have much to add to, other than I use the Classic Caspers that everyone recommends and I also cannot with a slender.
JM: Okay, well you're both missing out because sleeping on your stomach with a slender is a DREAM.
JG: I mean it is a great time to talk about our nood…
JM: NOOD IN THE SNOOD!
VVP: Yeah, let’s talk about the nood which, I have a confession to make…
JG: Oh god, you HATE the nood?
VVP: No, but for as long as you two have been talking about the Nood in the Snood™️, I have never entirely understood the name. Like, is it because it's kind of taupe colored? I just kept thinking of it like NUDE and then today I blinked and was like, “Oh my god, they mean noodle! The NOOD (as in noodle, not naked) IN A SNOOD.” I’m such an idiot. Anyway.
JM: Hahaha, yessss, because it’s a NOODLE.
JG: It's a noodle, wearing a snood. An excellent Jayna discovery.
JM: The actual name (Wiggle Pillow) is disgusting, btw. But it’s the greatest pillow of all time. And they just came out with a new cover I think!
JG: Wiggle pillow! Lol.
JM: Unknotting the nood is my favorite part of the day because it means it’s bedtime and I get to nestle into it.
JG: Does JP hate it? Bradley hid mine.
VVP: I'm going to have to sneak mine in the house. Nick does not want a nood. Why do men hate the nood?!
JG: HATE. There are tiktoks about it.
JM: Men hate the nood because they feel like it's, like, getting in the way.
VVP: My eyes just rolled soooooooo hard. Men don't know anything about beds honestly.
JM: JP doesn't hate the nood though. I think he respects it. He hates the mattress topper though. But we agreed we can have it on the bed half the year.
VVP: Okay, so I do think a mattress topper is a bed unlock. A good firm mattress with a topper? DREAM.
JM: An absolute unlock!
JG: Agree. Though a lot of mattresses come with a topper now! Like an attached topper.
JM: Yes but I like a topper in addition to the topper! This one is perfect and not a bill trill (though it is from Amazon, sorryyyy)!
VVP: Okay, princess and the pea.
VVP: Anya and Colin also have an amazing topper, which is this one. I have slept on it many, many, many times and highly endorse it. Can we do some more pillow talk though, because I also loooooove throw pillows.
JM: I love the mohair throw pillows from Hawkins.
JG: BEST colors!
VVP: Can I ask a dumb question? Where are you buying the pillow for it? Or maybe that one comes with a pillow. But you know what I mean. So many don't! And then I get anxious that I’m not going to end up buying the right pillow insert.
JM: Not dumb! I feel like Target has good inserts. Or Amazon. But I feel like for a throw pillow I don't want to splurge on an insert, because I'm not sleeping on them or anything. Oh, and probably Overstock, which is now Bed Bath and Beyond (eyerolllll).
JG: Etsy also has a ton of very fun throws. Lotta repurposed rugs. Separately, I LOVE a lumbar. Also love this tootsie roll.
JM: I loooove the Coming Soon rounds, but they’re a GREAT example of architect syndrome.
JM: Ok wait. What about foot of the bed? I'm a folded blanket at the foot, always. It usually falls off but then I put it back in the morning. I like being able to like, stick a leg out but then maybe pop a foot under the folded blanket, like a foot pocket. And in the winter I sometimes pull it up when I'm cold.
VVP: I like a folded blanket for sure for aesthetic reasons. I don’t usually want it there when I’m sleeping. I have a Tompkins Studio throw/quilt thing that I use. Their stuff is soooooo nice but $$$.
JM: Ugh, yeah love a quilt. Also good to spend some time digging around on etsy for quilts because you can find decently priced ones sometimes. I still love the APC ones too.
VVP: APC makes quilts??
JM: Big time.
VVP: Wowee, who knew! Okay, so this is not novel information but Dusen Dusen's woven/knit blankets are so nice and heavy. Also, obviously, the Apparis blanket!!
JM: Oh DUH. Best blanket ever. Weird size but the best.
JG: The softest cloud. These Mantas Ezcaray throws are good colors, more decor-y. But like WHAT is that website?
VVP: lolol "REF 8924379238423.” Ezcaray really wants to make you work for it.
JG: I’m VERY curious about this Morrow Goods coverlet—and Morrow Goods in general (like, how cute?!). Also, these Jenni Kayne throws are SO, so soft. And make good gifts!
VVP: Does anyone have good blanket storage?
JG: I love a ladder (this one is also pretty, but splurgy)! And a basket, too!
VVP: I like a ladder! I used to have one and I forgot about that as an option. It's a good space saver. Okay, one more maybe atypical bed question because my favorite thing to do is lie in bed all day long. Any good bed trays for snackies and things??
JG: Oh how CUTE. I have a cute pink one. I have to find it. Also vintage!
JM: I have a good little non-slip Kinto tray!
VVP: Non-slip tray!! Genius.
JG: Now I’m looking at vintage breakfast trays on etsy. But I gotta hop!
JM: Oh shit me too. But yay BED!
VVP: NIGHT NIGHT SLEEP TIGHT BED BUGS.
